Material first
Bulk density, particle size, moisture and flow behaviour decide screw geometry, agitation and hopper angle before any model number is chosen.
Volumetric or gravimetric
Volumetric where the material is consistent and the cost matters; gravimetric where the recipe or the reporting requires proof of what was actually fed.
Mixing
Batch or continuous, with the geometry chosen for the ratio, the fragility of the components and the homogeneity the process needs.
Transport between steps
Mechanical or pneumatic conveying selected so the material arrives in the condition it left.
