The first decision is the sack itself. FFS machines form the bag from film roll at the moment it is needed — film costs considerably less per bag than a pre-made sack and takes far less warehouse space. Open-mouth machines fill pre-made sacks and close them by sewing or sealing; the machine costs less but the consumable costs more, and throughput barely changes with sack weight. Valve bag fillers use self-closing sacks and remove the closing station from the line entirely.
The bag placer is what turns a semi-automatic line into a fully automatic one — the single step that otherwise keeps an operator at the machine for the whole shift.
