Pneumatic conveying moves bulk solids through a pipe using air. The route can bend, rise, run overhead and split to several destinations — and nothing along it moves except the material.

There are two ways to do it, and the choice is set by the material rather than by the layout.

Dilute phase suspends particles in a fast air stream. It is simpler, cheaper and handles most powders and granules — but the velocity that keeps material airborne is the same velocity that wears pipe bends and breaks fragile products.

Dense phase pushes material as slugs at a fraction of that velocity, using a pressure vessel instead of a rotary valve. Abrasive minerals stop grinding away bends, plastic pellets stop generating angel hair, and blends arrive still mixed. The trade is a more complex system with cyclic flow and pressure vessel certification.

Not every material forms stable slugs, so dense phase suitability is assessed from material properties and, where needed, a conveying trial.
